Property worth more than Sh 2.5 million was lost after strong winds destroyed various structures at Nyakayia Mixed Secondary school in Homa Bay Sub County.
The winds blew off two classrooms’ and the staffroom roof on Sunday evening. The incident also led to destruction of chairs, laboratory equipment, and three sacks of maize, books and other learning aids.
More than 50 students of Forms One and Two are the worst affected after their classroom roofs were blown off.
The students will be forced to learn under trees for an indefinite duration according to the school’s Principal Paminus Odhiambo and the Board of Management (BOM) chairman Tom Onyango who both said the incident paralyzed learning in the school.
Odhiambo further expressed concern that learning under trees is risky as it exposes the learners to lightning strikes and discomfort due to the ongoing heavy rains pounding the area.
Onyango appealed to well-wishers to intervene with financial aid to help them replace the damaged property.
“I also call on the county department of disaster management and Homa Bay Town NGCDF to intervene and salvage the students since the school lacks emergency funds,” Onyango said.
