Stray Hyenas Menace Hits Rachuonyo South Sub County

Residents of Karabach Sub-Location, Kodera North location in Rachuonyo South Sub-County are living in fear following persistent attacks on their livestock by stray hyenas.

The residents of Mititi and Rare villages have appealed to the Kenya Wildlife Services organisation to intervene, saying that they have lost several livestock as a result of Hyena attacks.

Last night, the hyenas attacked three homes in the two villages (Mititi and Rare) and killed two sheep and a goat before disappearing into the nearby Kodera forest.

Karabach Sub-Location Assistant chief, Erick Achola confirmed the incidents, saying area residents have lost domestic animals in a series of attacks.

Mr. Achola expressed concern that the hyenas might also attack villagers because of their increasing numbers in the entire Sub-location if urgent intervention is not taken to contain the situation.

He called on Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to swing into action and lay a trap to restrain the animals before further attacks.

The warden in charge of Homa Bay County, Millicent Atieno said that her team will visit the area to find ways of restraining the hyenas to prevent further damage.
