State to equip Chemoge Training Centre

The Chemoge High Altitude Training Centre in Mt. Elgon is set to be equipped and upgraded to a national training center, said Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

It was joy and jubilation as the Cabinet Secretary confirmed to equip the athletic centre in Mt. Elgon Sub County, Bungoma County.

Speaking at Banantega in Mt. Elgon Bungoma County during the National tree planting exercise, Ababu noted that the facility is strategic with a capacity to cater for local and national athletes.

“We are going to equip this facility and give it a complete face lift. It’s one of a kind in the country,” he  said.

He committed, through his Sports Ministry, to ensure the completion of sports facilities across the country to ease congestion at Iten in Elgeyo Marakwet County and other regions.

“The projects earmarked for completion include the High Altitude Training Centres for athletes in Chemoge. This will serve our sportsmen and women. It will ease congestion, ignite the local economy, and bring investment opportunities to the region,” he reiterated.

The training camp is a state-of-the-art facility with a gym, hostels, cafeteria, VIP rooms, and cafeteria, among others.

The Mt. Elgon High Altitude Centre is among projects initiated between 2013 and 2017 under Governor Lusaka’s first tenure and abandoned by his predecessor.

It will also remain in history that Mt. Elgon Sub County is among the subcounties that have produced legends in athletics, namely the late Ben Jipcho, the first Kenyan to win a long-distance race and win gold for Kenya.
