The International women’s day in Mandera was celebrated at Mandera GK prison with calls for the society to protect women’s rights.
Led by nominated MCA Umul Kheir Mohamed, the women urged the government to curb drug abuse alleging it was the main cause of gender-based violence in the region.
Umul noted the youth had abdicated their productive role in the society due to misuse of drugs as the vice was on the rise.
Halima Bilow, a nominated MCA urged the community to shun female genital mutilation noting it was ruining lives of young girls in the region yet it was of no value in the modern society.
Speakers at the celebration called on the community to empower women to enable them play a significant role in fending for their families.
The officer in charge of Mandera GK prison Francis Mulandi revealed the institution has procured four sewing machines that will help improve tailoring training among inmates especially women.
