The construction of 7.7 Kilometer roads within Narok town that cost Sh680 million is on course with the works expected to be completed in March 2023.
Speaking when he led the Regional Development Implementation Coordination Committee to inspect the road, the Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Maalim Mohamed, said once completed, the road will help curb the flash floods experienced in the town during prolonged rainy seasons.
The RC asked the contractor to fast-truck the works so that the residents can benefit from the construction that include drainage structures that comprises of a twin box culvert and a mega bridge near the Narok GK prison
He said already the contractor has been paid Sh260 million and has done over 70 per cent of the works adding that the government expects him to do the job even without pay as agreed when signing the contract.
“The contractor won the contract because he proved he had the financial capability of doing the work. We expect the work to be completed within the timelines,” he said.
The road that is being supervised by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is being upgraded to Bitumen standards by Sinoe Construction Limited.
It includes 3.6 Km Kims Breeze- Polung’a raod, 1.96 Km Olmarei Lang’ road, 0.74 Km ENSDA- Africa Hope Road, 0.8 Km bridge approaches and a 0.6 Km commissioners loop road.
The construction of the road followed a presidential directive, after the Narok traders requested President Uhuru Kenyatta to construct the roads to curb floods during the Madaraka Day Celebrations held at William Ole Ntimama in the year 2019.
“The government does not start projects that they are not sure they will be completed. Once a project is begun, it should be completed within the timelines given because we do not want stalled projects,” he said.
Once completed, the road will help to decongest the town as it will offer alternative route to drivers plying along the Bomet- Narok- Maai Mahiu highway. The road construction began in June 2020 with a contract period of 31 months.
He was accompanied by Narok County Development and Implementation Committee led by Commissioner Isaac Masinde.
