Sh1.8 billion allocated for electricity in Kericho

The government has allocated Sh1.8 billion in the 2026/27 Financial Year to expand electricity connectivity in Kericho County.

At least 17,500 households are expected to benefit from enhanced access to reliable electricity under the rural electrification programme.

Speaking during the commissioning and launch of Kenya Power Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP) projects in Soin/Sigowet Constituency, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the government had allocated Sh270 million to connect 2,500 households to electricity in the constituency.

The tour covered Barageiwet Village in Soliat Ward, Kesainet Village in Kaplelartet Ward and Chebobta Village in Sigowet Ward, where the Cabinet Secretary commissioned completed projects and flagged off new electricity connectivity works.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government remains committed to ensuring more Kenyans have access to affordable and reliable electricity as part of efforts to accelerate economic growth and improve livelihoods.

“Those who have not yet benefited from the electricity programme will eventually be connected. The government will ensure every Kenyan has access to electricity because it is a right that should be enjoyed by all, irrespective of their social status,” Wandayi said.

He pointed out that electricity will enable learners to study at night, improve security, support healthcare services and spur businesses and other income-generating activities, ultimately improving livelihoods and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Meanwhile, Soin/Sigowet Member of Parliament Justice Kemei welcomed the government’s continued investment in rural electrification, saying 30 electricity projects are being implemented across the constituency to increase access to electricity and spur socio-economic development.

The  Kericho County Commissioner Omari Ali said the electrification programme will enable children to study at night and improve their academic performance through access to reliable lighting.

“Electricity will enable residents to be able to use electrical appliances and equipment in their homes and businesses, enhancing productivity and improving their quality of life,” said Ali.
