A middle aged woman was on Monday slapped with a Sh.50, 000 fine for peddling bhang within Meru town.
Lucy Nyoroka who was arrested September 22, 2019 at Ntugi Plaza within Meru town pleaded guilty to the offence of being in possession of 73 rolls of bhang worth Sh.3,700 in street value.
She pleaded guilty to the offence before the Chief Magistrate (CM), Hannah Ndung’u and was convicted on her own plea of guilt, attracting the fine or in default to spend 12 months in prison.
Nyoroka had asked for leniency from the court, saying she was forced into the illegal business so as to fend for her family since she is widowed.
She told the court that she depends on the business to raise fees for her children and meeting other family needs.
The CM handed the sentence, stating that it was inappropriate for a mother to get involved in illegal drug business.
