Several tourist cottages in Kwale destroyed by fire

A view of the tourist cottages wrecked by fire in Kwale County on Tuesday night.

Several thatched tourist cottages were destroyed in a blaze in South Coast area of Msambweni sub-county of Kwale on Tuesday night.
The fire first started in a thicket close to the Duara cottages situated at Mwaembe area of the South Coast before spreading rapidly to Duara and several neighbouring cottages.
Msambweni sub-county police commander Nehemiah Bitok who confirmed the incident said no injuries were reported adding that investigators visited the scene to establish the cause of the inferno.
The police chief said the cause of the fire was not yet known but that nothing has been salvaged.
Bitok on Tuesday said fire and rescue services from the county government worked overnight to bring the devastating blaze under control.
He said Duara, Jumba, and Villa Chui resorts and several staff houses along the beach line were some of the cottages that were extensively destroyed in the fierce fire.
The tourist establishments are reportedly owned by German investors with interest in the hospitality industry.
Eyewitnesses said workers and guests at the hotels could only look on helplessly as the fire ravaged the buildings for several hours before the county fire engines with sirens blazing arrived and extinguished the blaze.
