Seven Congolese nationals were arraigned before a Maralal court Friday charged with being in the country illegally.
According to the charge sheet, the seven men were arrested on 14th March in a house they had rented at Allamano village in Maralal town.
The charge sheet further stated that suspicious residents alerted Nyumba Kumi members about strange men that had rented a one roomed house.
Members of the community policing initiative accompanied by the police later headed to the house and upon interrogations, the aliens failed to give a valid reason for being in the country.
In their defense, the accused persons said they were refugees and presented papers allegedly issued by the United Nations (UN).
Maralal Senior Resident Magistrate Abraham Gachie directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to verify the documents presented by the accused.
The magistrate further directed that the accused be remanded at the Maralal police station until Tuesday 19th March 2019 to allow for verification of their documents.
