Security enhanced in volatile Nkararo area

The government has boosted security at Nkararo area in Trans Mara West Sub county after a group of youths, armed with bows and arrows threatened to prevent people from planting sugarcane.

Narok County Police Commandant John Kizito said a group of armed young men from the Siria clan approached and insulted a group of Uasin Gishu clan youth who were planting sugarcane on a land that borders the two clans.

This led to conflict between the two clans, as their members started conflicting with each other causing tension in the volatile land.

Following the fresh chaos, the police commander said a contingent of security officers drawn from the General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Police unit have been deployed in the area to restore calm.

At the same time, Kizito said the police have launched a manhunt for the youth who initially began the conflict before escaping to an unknown place when tension heightened.

“We are pursuing the perpetrators of the conflict and we assure you that we will find them and arraign them in court. We will not allow a few individuals with selfish interest to cause tension in this land again,” said Kizito.

In the year 2018, a government security team launched an operation to recover all illegal guns in the hands of civilians after 14 people were shot dead in prolonged clashes between the Siria and Uasin Gishu clans.

In the process, 115 guns were recovered and hundreds of bows and arrows that were returned by the members of the public voluntarily.

Among those killed were a police officer and a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer triggering top government officials led by the Internal Security CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i to visit the volatile area.

In April this year, the government issued 1,273 title deeds to the Nkararo residents aimed at restoring permanent peace on the land as land disputes were cited as the major cause of conflicts in the area.
