The Western Kenya Regional security team has formed a committee to investigate areas prone to road accidents on major roads with a view to taking remedial measures.
Regional Commissioner (RC) Isaiah Nakoru said the government was concerned over high rate of road accidents across the country, saying some of the accidents are avoidable.
Speaking in his office in Kakamega after chairing a regional security meeting that brought together the Kakamega County and sub-county security teams, the RC said boda boda operators have also been brought on board to ensure they adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
He said the traffic department is seeking to streamline the industry by engaging the boda boda cyclists so that they can adhere to road safety measures and minimize accidents.
Boda Boda operators have often been blamed to contributing to high accident rates across the country by flouting traffic regulations.
“Security officers are engaging the boda boda operators to ensure the sector is streamlined not just for road safety but also root out thuggery” he added.
The RC said the traffic department will ensure road unworthy vehicles are removed from the road.
The region has witnessed a number of tragic accidents, with one of the worst occurring on 2nd of January this year at Musembe on Webuye -Eldoret highway, where 8 people died on the spot.
