In a move to boost the health sector, the Homa Bay County Government has launched a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Ndhiwa Sub County.
The Health Cabinet Secretary (CS), Sicily Kariuki while on a tour of the facility called upon the area residents to support the project by being the first to send their children to the facility.
The CS challenged the County Governments to give the students graduating from the KMTCs a priority during staff recruitment as a means of curbing unemployment in their counties.
At the same time, Kariuki assured the residents that her Ministry will support the project, adding that the facility will receive lecturers in the course of this week.
The CS was accompanied by Homa County Deputy Governor, Hamilton Orata, Ndhiwa MP, Martin Owino and the County Health CEC, Prof. Richard Muga.
Speaking at the event, Orata promised that the County Government will collaborate with the National government to staff and equip the facility.
On his part, the MP requested the Ministry of Health to empower level I hospitals and dispensaries as well as standardize the training for Community health workers so that they may be employed by the County.
Owino revealed that he has put aside Sh30 million towards the project from Ndhiwa Constituency Development Project alongside a donation of an administration block for the KMTC.
The new KMTC is the second in Homa Bay County after a similar facility in Homa Bay Town. The Ndhiwa KMTC is expected to receive its first batch of students this week after the arrival of the lecturers who will roll out the various courses.
