Scores injured in a road accident

Four pedestrians were injured when a vehicle veered-off the road and ploughed over them along Sindo-Mbita road in Homa Bay County.

The four, including two students of Mbita High school, were walking by the road side when the accident occurred.

Mbita Sub County Police Commander, Nathan Sanya, said the accident occurred when a vehicle that was travelling from Sindo town lost control and veered-off the road.

He said that the speeding vehicle hit the four causing serious injuries.

“The injured were rushed to Mbita Sub-county Hospital and later transferred to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment,” he said.

Mbita High School Principal, Kennedy Ojijo, said they rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured to hospital.

“I am confident that they will get well because they are on the right hands,” Ojijo said.

He said that the students were travelling back home for April holidays.

“We have notified parents of the affected students. We are monitoring the learners keenly,” Ojijo said.

The driver of the Toyota vehicle and other passengers disappeared after the accident.

“They abandoned the vehicle and disappeared to an unknown place. It seems they were drunk,” Sanya said.

The Police Boss said they towed the vehicle to Mbita Police Station for inspection.

“We are conducting investigations, I hope they will surrender themselves in,” Sanya said.
