Schools should not be re-opened any time soon, urges bishop

The Government should not be in a hurry to re-open schools during this pandemic period in order to cushion children from getting coronavirus.

Nyando Legio Maria Sect leader Simon Okwama has said opening of schools will put the lives of the children in danger and cases of the infectious disease were likely to increase.

Okwama called on other church leaders to stand up and oppose the re-opening of schools but instead push for the deferment of second term.

“As church leaders, we oppose the reopening of schools. Let us study the situation first and ensure that every decision made to open the schools is in the best interests for our children,” he said.

He called on President Uhuru Kenyatta not to be pressurized to open schools but for an alternative push for extension of the terms.

“The government should tread very carefully. Opening schools in hurry may affect our children in a big way,” he said.

The Bishop who was speaking in Nyando Sub County, Kisumu County Friday said those agitating for the reopening of schools do not mean well to the Country and its children.

He called his followers to continue praying for the country, adding that the pandemic will finally be repressed.
