The administration of Akoko Mixed Secondary School in Bondo sub-county have expressed fears that the school might be closed following an acute water shortage which has hit the institution over the last one month.
According to the School Principal, Daniel Ng’iela, they have not had water since mid-January this year as a result of the continued dry spell, a situation that has put the students into great suffering.
He said that the school only had some little rain water which they used during the first two weeks of opening and since then, they have only been sourcing for the commodity from local dealers who sold it at very exorbitant rates.
Ng’iela, who revealed that the school uses at least Sh.18, 000 for water daily, stating that the condition has made running of the school to become very difficult because at times, they were forced to divert the monies which were meant for other activities to buy water.
The Principal told KNA that there was no way that the expense on water could be reduced because the nearest water point was at Wagusu Beach, was over 10 kilometers away.
He disclosed that the school had initially been relying on water from Olago water project but stopped getting the commodity about six years ago, before the area MP’s office mooted an idea of supplying the school with water from West Sakwa water project which only worked for about six months and later stalled.
Ng’iela expressed fears that they may soon be forced to send the students home if the situation becomes more unbearable.
He therefore pleaded with the relevant government departments and well-wishers to come to their aid so that they could possibly construct boreholes to end the perennial water problem at the school.
