Safaricom boss inaugurated as  Meru University chancellor

Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa was inaugurated as the second chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology, marking the start of his five-year term.

Dr. James Mwangi, the founding chancellor of Equity Group Holdings Plc, has been succeeded by Mr. Ndegwa.

Mr. Ndegwa’s appointment as chancellor demonstrates the university’s commitment to utilising industry expertise and collaboration to enhance its academic programmes and innovation efforts.

The individual expresses their gratitude for being appointed as the chancellor at M.U.S.T., expressing their commitment to the institution’s mission and purpose.

Mr. Ndegwa expressed excitement about collaborating with the university’s leadership, faculty, students, and community to build academic integrity and innovation, committing to pursuing new horizons with passion.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, expressed his delight at Ndegwa’s inauguration, stating that it was with great enthusiasm that they were welcoming their new chancellor.

Ndegwa’s leadership at Safaricom, a leading communications company in Africa, demonstrates his commitment to transformative change and technology, demonstrating his ability to address societal needs effectively.

“His visionary leadership at Safaricom, marked by a strategic shift towards a purpose-led technology company, is an inspiration for us all. We are excited about the potential for collaboration and growth under his guidance,” said Professor Odhiambo.

About Dr. Mwangi, the outgoing Chancellor, Prof. Odhiambo, said his standing in Kenya, Africa, and globally has been a unifying figure among stakeholders in the university.

Prof. Odhiambo praised Dr. Mwangi’s sagacious actions at Meru University of Science and Technology, highlighting his family’s exceptional philanthropy and their impact on the university’s success during challenging seasons.

He added that the first and founding chancellor has been released from his noble duty, feeling honoured, proud, privileged, and respected.

Mwangi, on his part, welcomed and promised full support to Ndegwa as he took over the leadership.

“I have no doubt that he will continue to keep alive the vision and mission of the institution, more so in building on the foundation of academic excellence, innovation, and a commitment to societal impact,” said Dr. Mwangi.

Meru University of Science and Technology was established as a full-fledged university following the award of its charter on March 1, 2013.
