Rotarians take part in tree planting as world celebrate Word Environment Day

Rotary Club Kutus branch representatives yesterday planted avocado trees at Kiamiciri Primary School in Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga County to mark the World Environment Day.

Rotarian Samuel Mwangi, the interim president of the Kutus Rotary Club branch, said they decided to plant the avocado trees as they had the potential to raise income for the institution and its surrounding community after maturing.

Mwangi who led the tree planting exercise called on other non-governmental organizations to come up with more such projects to enable Kenya attain 15 billion trees target in ten years as directed by President Dr William Ruto.

He also called on the government to revive the 4K clubs in learning institutions saying the clubs had many benefits to learners.

Jackson Njugi, a director of projects at the Rotary Club, said they anticipate to plant more trees to mitigate climate change.

Ngugi added that they chose the school in order to demonstrate to the pupils how trees are planted and nurtured.

He added that they aim to be planting 100 trees in every primary school they visit at a cost of approximately Sh50,000 each.

Kiamiciri Primary School deputy headteacher Benson Njoka, promised to ensure the trees are well nurtured to maturity by learners.

Njoka also promised to engage more with the Rotary Club to have more trees planted within the school compound to conserve the environment and as well for economic gains.
