Residents urged to utilize free Legal Awareness Week

Kakamega residents have been urged to take advantage of the Law Society of Kenya’s (LSK) free Legal Awareness Week, to understand the steps and procedures they need, to get legal assistance.

Secretary General, LSK, Kakamega Chapter, Flevin Mulama, said the free legal advice will be offered to all residents and litigants in court.

He said the open exercise will be conducted in the Kakamega, Matungu, Likuyani and Butere Law Courts grounds.

“We are conducting Legal Awareness Week, where we will be offering free legal advice to the residents and litigants in courts,” he pointed out.

Mulama said after the sessions, those who will need to proceed to court will enter an agreement with advocates and take the necessary steps required.

He pointed out that the Legal Awareness Week has been necessitated by the need by most of the residents in Kakamega, who seem not to be familiar with the court processes.

LSK has partnered with the Office of the County Commissioner and the Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman).

The representative of Young Lawyers, Kakamega Chapter, Terry Shinjenje, said in the Legal Awareness Week, they will educate residents on alternative dispute resolution, instead of going to court on some cases.

She said that cases on boundary disputes can easily be solved by the Land Registrar at the Lands Office and not necessarily going to court.

Ms Shinjenje encouraged Alternative Dispute Resolution on family issues which can be dealt with easily, urging that they need to seek legal action in court, in cases where all mechanisms have been exhausted, without an amicable solution.
