The Western Regional Commissioner (RC), Anne Ng’etich has appealed to people living around Sio Port and Port Victoria areas in Busia County to support the National Government’s plan to expand Ports in these areas.
Ngetich who spoke to the residents at Sio Port Beach on Tuesday explained that it is the government’s wish to bring development and services closer to citizens.
“In this region, your major economic activity is dependent on the Lake,” she said adding that the government plans to revive blue economy across the country.
She added that work has already kicked off smoothly in Port Florence, Kisumu.
The RC urged residents to fully support the project even if it meant sacrificing portions of their parcels of land.
Ng’etich further explained that the project will not only benefit the residents but will also improve the country’s economy.
She at the same time urged residents to be vigilant and report suspected terrorists to the relevant authorities.
“Help us to protect this country because this area is one of the entry points of terrorists,” she said adding that parents should know the whereabouts of their children at all times.
She further pointed out that the county had exhibited high rates of school dropouts in the recent past due to fishing, sand harvesting and disco matanga.
“The government has provided opportunity for all children to access education irrespective of whether they are physically challenged or not,” she said adding that parents should ensure that their children stay in school.
The Busia County Commissioner (CC), Jacob Narengo urged residents to refrain from selling illicit liquor and un-customed goods.
Narengo also appealed to residents to support the government’s plan to establish Kenya Ports Authority in the area.
Local residents lauded security agencies for their good work but requested the government to improve the road leading to Sio Port beach and provide them with the right fishing gears so that they do not engage in conflicts with Ugandan security officers in Lake Victoria.
Expansion of Ports have since kicked off at Homa bay, Migori and Kisumu Counties with Port Victoria and Sio Port in Busia County set to kick off soon.
