Residents urged to seek eye care at county facilities

Busia County Director of Medical Services, Janerose Ambuchi, has urged the local residents to seek eye care services at Busia County Referral Hospital, Port Victoria, Khunyangu, and Kocholya Sub County hospitals instead of travelling all the way to Sabatia Eye Hospital in Vihiga.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting at a hotel in Busia on Thursday, Ambuchi stated that the four facilities that were supported by the Fred Hollows Foundation are fully operational.

“There is a need to create awareness among the public regarding the available services in the county,” she said, adding that many residents still end up travelling to other health facilities in Tororo (Uganda) and Sabatia (Vihiga County) for treatment.

Busia County Coordinator for Eye Care Solutions, Harriet Khavere, said that bringing partners together was relevant due to statistics showing an increase in eye-related sick cases from the previous year’s.

Khavere urged those with eye problems to avoid self-prescribed over-the-counter medications, desist from using traditional herbal medicines, utilise protective eyewear when carrying out manual labour, and maintain a nutritious diet for optimal eye health.

The stakeholders agreed to renew their commitment to improving eye care awareness and accessibility across the county, with particular emphasis on preventive measures and early interventions.
