Residents urged to donate blood to save lives

Garissa County Woman Representative Amina Siyat has urged residents to readily respond to appeals to donate blood to save lives whenever called upon.

Speaking when she led a blood donation drive in Garissa town, Ms Siyat said that residents should adapt a habit of donating regularly to ensure the area blood bank is fully equipped.

“We are donating blood to help mothers and any other person that will be brought to our local hospital needing blood transfusion,” Siyat said.

According to the County Woman Rep, the drive was about celebrating the Mothers’ Day.

“The blood bank at Garissa County Referral Hospital is near depletion but we have decided today to kick start donating blood so that we can have enough stock,” the Woman Representative said.

The event was organised by the Udgoon Foundation, an organisation associated with the County Woman Rep.

The exercise was carried out in partnership with the Garissa County Government, St Johns Ambulance and Garissa Youth Association.

“This is not about politics but about helping our people who really need blood transfusion. We have to keep donating blood because you can never tell who the next patient in need of blood is,” she added.

Ms Siyat pledged to ensure the blood donation culture is spread across the county so that at least every sub county can participate in the exercise.

Mr Siyat Kunow, a passionate football fan, lauded the initiative and urged other local leaders to initiate blood donations in their areas.

“Donating blood is a very noble idea and a blessing since it is all about saving lives. I have been donating blood every year and I have remained healthy,” he said.
