Residents of Kinoru, Tseikuru Ward in Mwingi North constituency have called on Kitui County government to intervene and save them from walking for hours in search of water.
Mwingi North is among the worst drought affected constituencies in the county. The area has been receiving very little rainfall over the years. And as a result many rivers have dried up leaving residents suffering.
The residents have therefore urged Governor Julius Malombe administration to consider sinking boreholes in Mwingi North to alleviate the water crisis.
Governor Malombe had promised to address water shortage in his manifesto ahead of this year’s General election.
A resident, Kalimi Mwendwa lamented that their children are suffering as they are required to carry water to school. “Trekking for 10 kilometers every day in search of water has been a challenge to the school-going children,” she lamented.
She regretted that following the prolonged drought, many children are forced to skip schools due to lack of water.
“Many of our children do not go to school because there is no water. We urge our county government to rescue our children so they can learn comfortably,” she appealed.
Mwikali Musya, also a Kinoru resident, said they have already identified areas where the earth dams can be sunk including places close to schools.
“I am forced to leave my children asleep to trek for hours to get water to prepare them for school. We waste many hours to fetch water from the nearby seasonal river that is 10 kilometers away,” she lamented.
