Residents call for calm following conclusion of poll

Residents of Nyeri have called for a return to normalcy following the declaration of Deputy President, Dr William Ruto, as the President-Elect during the August 9 poll.

A majority of those KNA spoke to expressed satisfaction of the outcome, saying the election was fair and transparent.

Businesses in the town have also gone back to normal with traders, saying they look forward to Dr Ruto making true his promise in resuscitating the economy which is struggling due to the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic and the prolonged campaign period.

Bernard Mwangi, a bodaboda rider, argues that the election was fair and applauded the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati for undertaking an open and transparent election despite the glaring challenges.

“This year’s General Election was fair and Dr Ruto won the hearts of the majority. I am hoping that peace shall prevail and businesses will be reopened. We asked God for the best leader and he has definitely answered our prayers,” he claimed.

Julius Muriu, a hawker who plies his trade within Nyeri town also applauded Kenyans of all walks for having turned up to vote peacefully on August 9 despite their divergent political differences. He further said he has great faith in the new president elect’s ability to transform the fortunes of the country.

“I am grateful that many residents of Nyeri voted well despite the chilly weather on voting day. I am impressed with Ruto’s victory and pray that God guides his government into steering Kenya into greater heights including reviving our depressed economy,” he said.

Jacinta Odhiambo, a resident of Nyeri town on her part gave Chebukati a thumbs up for conducting transparent and fair election and expressed optimism that Dr Ruto will deliver his promises as outlined in his manifesto.

“I am happy with the way Wafula Chebukati ensured that elections were carried out in the most transparent and credible manner. I am relieved that there is peace and calmness amidst mixed reactions due to the long-awaited pronouncement. I am hopeful beyond any slightest doubt that Ruto will give the best governance and am eager to see how his reign will turn out,” said Odhiambo.

On Monday, Chebukati declared Dr Ruto as the winner of the August 9 election after garnering 7,176,146 votes in a contest that had attracted four candidates.
