Relief food distribution kicks off in Garissa

Garissa County Government has kicked off distribution of relief food targeting some 15,000 households within the county.

Finance CEC Issa Oyow said the program will run throughout the week to ensure that all vulnerable families across all the six sub-counties of Garissa, Balambala, Ijara, Hulugho, Lagdera and Fafi benefit.

Oyow however regretted that some far-flung areas recently received heavy rains that rendered the roads impassable which may delay the delivery of the relief food.

The CEC noted that the pastoral communities are still faced with hardships related to the drought despite the on-going rains.

”The livestock are still weak and cannot fetch good market price. Some places are yet to receive reliable rainfall and are still relying on water trucking from the County Government,” Oyow said.

He said that the County Government initially prioritized water trucking as government and partner organizations offered cash transfers to the drought victims.

Oyow said the department of religious affairs and sub-county administrators have been tasked with the distribution of the assorted foodstuff in all the sub-counties.

Lagdera Sub County Administrator, Mohamed Sambul, who is coordinating the distribution exercise at Darsalam, Afweyne, Maalimin and Jilango said 16 centers in the sub county are yet to receive reliable rainfall and others are facing food supply crisis due to the rain that damaged the roads.
