Forty students who are from vulnerable families and had performed well in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) are smiling all the way to secondary school as they have received a full scholarship from Machakos County.
The students who were picked from every ward after a thorough vetting by county officials obtained 350 marks and above in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and are beneficiaries of the County scholarship that will cater for their school fees for the four years
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti while launching the Machakos County Scholarship Drive outside her office, said that she is committed to ensuring they empower young people to pursue their dreams through education.
She added that over the years, several bright, vulnerable and orphaned students have missed opportunities to pursue their goals because of a lack of funds and her government is determined to change their future.
“My government has created a new avenue that will empower bright and needy students in school for the next four years through the Machakos County scholarship drive,” said the governor.
The county boss said she believes in the spirit of fairness and that’s why they formed the ward scholarship committee that vetted and identified the most deserving cases and some committee members even visited the beneficiaries’ homes to help in the selection process.
She urged the youngsters to maintain a high level of discipline and good grades, as the county government, via the Department of Education, will closely monitor the performance of all beneficiaries.
“I would like to remind the beneficiaries that indiscipline and poor performance may lead to the termination of the scholarship. I therefore urge parents and guardians to ensure the students remain focused on education,” pointed out the governor.
Wavinya further added that Machakos is emerging as a premium investment destination and as a government, they must prepare the children to tap existing and emerging opportunities,” Governor Ndeti said.
She appealed to the business community, corporates, well-wishers and non-governmental organizations to step in and support the deserving pupils in the county
The Governor hailed other stakeholders such as county officials, Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity bank and Family Bank who were part of the Machakos County scholarship drive.
