Reintroduction of pyrethrum farming rolled out in Elgeyo Marakwet

The reintroduction of pyrethrum farming in Elgeyo Marakwet County has officially kicked off in Chebulbai, Moiben Kuserwo ward.

The launch presided over by Elgeyo Marakwet County Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich saw more than 400 farmers grace the event.

Rotich expressed gratitude to the hundreds of farmers who came as a show of their interest in the cash crop, saying that it would empower them economically.

He thanked Kentegra Biotechnology holdings for agreeing to a partnership that would be helpful to farmers.

He added that the revival of the sector would soon bear fruits and farmers would be part of the lucrative outcome.

Kentegra Biotechnology Holdings distributed pyrethrum seeds to farmers enough to plant in 125 acres of farmland.

Micah Thuo, head of field operations at Kentegra said it was an honour to partner with the county government in such a noble cause.

He added that more than 400 farmers have so far registered and signed contracts with Kentegra.

“We are looking forward to joining the market share of pyrethrum and this is just a step towards the goal,” said the Deputy Governor.

He pointed out that the programme would be introduced to other wards in the County.

Currently the minimum price for pyrethrum is at Sh220 a kilo and it could go up to Sh380.
