Rape convict sentenced to 10 years in jail

A 27-year-old man who was found guilty of raping a 67-year-old granny has been sentenced to serve 10 years in jail by a Busia Court.

Busia High Court presiding Judge, Justice Edna Nyaloti found Nobert Okotchi Juma guilty of committing the sexual offence last year while armed with a sharp weapon.

Justice Nyaloti heard that Okotchi committed the criminal act on September 22 last year while adorned in artificial hair at Nagonga area in Funyula Constituency, probably to disguise himself.  He also caused grievous damage to the victim’s private parts in the process.

While giving the trial verdict on Wednesday, Justice Nyaloti said that the court was satisfied with the evidence provided by the prosecution and reports by the Gender officer from Funyula police station, Moses Mang’eni that the victim identified him through his voice as he was talking to her during the act.

Okotchi was however granted a 14-day window to appeal against the verdict or serve 10 years imprisonment at Korinda Prison.
