PWDs receive wheelchairs boost from County Government

The People Living with Physical Disability in Turkana County have received 75 wheelchairs from the County Government, which will help them move with ease.

The Sh. 3.5 million equipment will be distributed to all the seven sub-counties.

Speaking during the launch of the equipment at Lodwar Children’s Rescue Centre, which hosts the People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and needy children, Turkana County Ag.  Chief Executive (CEC) for The Ministry of Education, Sports and Social Protection George Emoru, lauded the initiative by the Social Protection Department.

“We are moving forward to ensure the facilities are there to support them so that they can move like other people,” said Emoru adding that the department will continue providing the equipment.

The CEC also requested the support of partners and well-wishers to ensure there are enough wheel chairs to meet the need of the larger number of the PWDs in the County.

On her part the Chief Officer of Education, Sports and Social Protection in the County, Pauline Lokuruka, said the County Government is committed in supporting the PWDs, especially in sports.

Lokuruka said the PWDs need support because they are like other people. She commended the incredible performance of the PWDs in the annual Enondo wheel chair race in Isiolo County.

“One of our PWDs is actually a winner of Enondo wheelchair race, which takes place every year in Isiolo, they have made us proud, our education office is full of trophies from PWDs,” said Lokuruka.

The Director of Social Protection, Mark Amiyo, said the County Government considers the needs of other categories of PWDs.

“In this budget we are planning to purchase assistive devices and fishing gears,” said Amiyo.

Social Protection Deputy Director Amos Ebenyo, said the government is making expeditious efforts to support the PWDs.
