Public infrastructure vandals are akin to terrorists and must be treated as so if the trend is to be contained, Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Opiyo Wandayi has said.
According to Wandayi, there was need for stern action to be taken to contain the vice that was costing the government a fortune.
He was speaking at the Amani children’s home in Gem constituency where he donated Christmas gifts to the orphans and vulnerable children.
Wandayi said that the government was spending heavily on infrastructure development and a few people cannot be allowed to frustrate the efforts by vandalizing the infrastructure.
“It costs the government heavily for such expensive infrastructure to be established,” he said adding, once such infrastructure is vandalized, it inconveniences not only the government but the people who are the beneficiaries. The CS was flanked by Gem member of parliament, Elisha Odhiambo and his Lang’ata counterpart, Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o who accompanied him to the event.
He said that going forward, the government will take vandalism, especially of electric gadgets and cables seriously.
Wandayi lamented that the government has made a lot efforts to extend electricity in Gem but the efforts are being thwarted by vandals and appealed to Kenyans protect the projects by exposing those who destroy them.
“We are putting on notice those thieves who are tampering with the government development agenda that the law will catch up with them however long it takes,” said the CS.
The legislators and Amani children’s home director, reverend Kenneth Wachianga hailed the CS for coming to the aid of the vulnerable children.
