Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has urged Kenyans to intensify hygiene and disease prevention measures following a rise in Mpox cases across the country.
Speaking during a management meeting in Nairobi on Monday, Muthoni stressed the need for sustained disease surveillance, vaccination, public awareness and adherence to good hygiene practices to contain the spread of the viral disease.
As of September 6, 2026, Kenya had recorded 1,298 confirmed Mpox cases and 19 deaths across 40 counties, with Mombasa County reporting the highest number of infections at 452.
Nairobi followed with 320 cases, while Busia had recorded 115 cases, highlighting the continued need for heightened surveillance and preventive measures in affected and high-risk areas.
The PS called on members of the public to remain vigilant and embrace measures aimed at reducing transmission, including maintaining proper hygiene and seeking timely medical attention when symptoms develop.
The meeting also reviewed progress in implementing commitments arising from the Kenya Health Summit, preparations for the upcoming Kenya Primary Health Care Innovation Conference (KEPHIC) 2026 and the country’s preparedness for anticipated health risks associated with El Niño conditions.
KEPHIC 2026 is scheduled to take place in Nairobi from October 26 to 29 under the theme focusing on prevention, primary healthcare, health promotion and community action.
Muthoni further challenged health agencies, directorates and divisions to strengthen coordination, assume clear responsibility for assigned tasks and ensure that their interventions deliver measurable results.
The meeting brought together chief executive officers of State corporations and regulatory bodies, heads of directorates and divisions, as well as members of the Ministry’s Senior Management Team.
The discussions are expected to strengthen coordination within the health sector and improve preparedness for emerging public health threats.
