The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Industry Dr Juma Mukhwana has urged Embu residents to plant more fruit trees as they join the national tree growing effort.
Dr Mukhwana said residents should plant more avocado, macadamia and cashew nut trees so as to provide the proposed county aggregation and industrial park with a steady supply of raw materials.
Mukhwana who was speaking at Maranga Hill in Runyenjes Sub County of Embu County where he was the guest of honour during the tree planting ceremony in the county also pointed out that more fruit trees would boost food security.
The county leadership led by Governor Cecily Mbarire, County Commissioner Jack Obuo, Woman Representative Njoki Njeru and Runyenjes MP also graced the occasion.
Governor Mbarire disclosed that some 100,000 seedlings were distributed to be planted in all parts of the county.
She said macadamia tree seedlings were distributed in the upper, wetter parts of the county while the lower semiarid ones would get cashew nut trees.
The governor who urged locals to protect the seedlings from goats said the county was determined to restore the county’s wetlands so as to have rivers that had almost disappeared.
