Interior Cabinet Secretary (PS) Dr. Karanja Kibicho has lauded improved security in Nyanza region.
Kibicho attributed the prevailing security to cooperation between security officials and members of the community.
The PS who held a security meeting with incoming Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika and new Regional Police Commander Lydia Ligami on Friday called for more collaboration with the national government officials to ensure that the prevailing security is maintained.
He said security was critical for meaningful development to be realized adding that the national government was on course in implementing various projects in the region.
He pointed out the revamped Kisumu Port would open up the region for trade and boost economic activities in the area.
The port, he said was complete and would be officially opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his East Africa Community counterparts once the Covid-19 curve flattened.
“The port is ready and the President would have opened it a long time ago but as you are aware, the Covid-19 pandemic interfered with the programme,” he said.
He said to make the port viable, the national government has embarked on rehabilitation of Nakuru-Kisumu metre gauge railway line to facilitate transportation of goods to the port.
Transportation of goods from Mombasa to Kisumu through the railway will ensure that cargo is tracked from the point of entry to exit, he said.
He urged the new national government officials to supervise and follow up on all national government projects to ensure that they were fully implemented.
