PS Harsama in drive to promote sport among the youth

State Department for ASALs and Regional Development principal secretary Kello Harsama is on a deliberate effort to tackle idleness and develop talent in sports among youths in Marsabit County.

Many youths are reportedly not in employment, which exposes them to the danger of indulging in drug abuse and other unlawful activities.

Harsama, through his Kello Harsama Foundation, has embarked on a mission to mobilise youths into forming football clubs in all wards in the county and which he intends to offer support by providing sporting gear.

Speaking on his behalf, the personal assistant Wako Galgallo pointed out that the sports potential among local youths was big and which required to be tapped.

Galgallo was speaking at Manyatta Jillo primary school playground when he handed over sporting gear from the foundation to the Young Boys Football Club (FC).

“Most youths are idle because of the job shortage challenge and as such, Harsama found it ideal to present them with an opportunity not only to be busy but also to nurture their ability in sports for posterity,” he said.

So far, the Harsama foundation which is purely charitable, has been able to donate sporting kits which include shoes, sports shirts and shorts, to 15 football clubs across the county.

Galgallo added that the foundation’s target was to develop and strengthen 50 teams in the county, which would apart from enhancing integration between local communities, is expected to stem drug and substance abuse among the youth.

Those who excel in the game and other sports intended in the plan will be assisted to secure full-time engagement in commercial leagues and competitions, hence creating employment.

Young boys FC coach Wako Sissae could not hide his joy and that of the group, saying the gesture was eye-catching because local youths have never witnessed a thing like that before.

“We have been hearing that clubs in other parts of the county, like Illeret, were being given support without knowing that we shall also have a date with the PS as well,” he remarked, adding that the move was bound to raise their morale.

He pointed out that the problem of drug abuse among the youth was widespread, adding that the menace has ruined the lives of many.

The coach appealed to other leaders from the region to emulate Harsama and give assistance, saying that the team, just as was the case with other local sporting clubs, lacked extra outfits like balls and socks.

The residents expressed gratitude to the principal secretary for finding it appropriate to plough back into the society to uplift the less fortunate.
