There is a need to promote sporting activities in learning institutions across the country to promote cohesion and peaceful coexistence among students from various backgrounds.
Speaking at an award ceremony for winners of the Senior Principal Kitale National Polytechnic tournament, the institution’s Principal Mr. John Otieno Akola said the tournament aimed at promoting cohesion as well as identifying talent among the students.
Akola said the institution started the tournament two years ago and added it has helped in the promotion of sports and talents among the students.
The Electrical Engineering team beat their IT counterparts 2-1 goal in the finals and were hence crowned champions of the Principal Cup 2022. Electronics Youth Assistant Coach Joash Mmasi and his assistant Collins Ochieng played a high quality game getting their goals through striker Peter Groach in the 15th minute.
IT defender Shadrack Ouma scored an own goal as he tried to control the ball in the defense area giving their opponents a second score in the 35th minute. IT’s goal was put in the net by Allan Kasembeli.
Electronics qualified for the finals after defeating the Building team 3-2 goals through penalties after a 1-1 draw. IT Assistant Coach Mugo Weru and Maxwel Sigowa qualified after their rivals Business were banned for misconduct.
In the finals in the same field, IT qualified for the finals by beating Business with 30-12 baskets and the Beauties of Application beat Agriculture 30-18.
The tournament was sponsored by the institution’s principal John Akola with the aim of promoting peace and promoting students’ talents.
Last year, Business FC was crowned champions after they beat Electrical Engineering 2-1 goals. Winners in the different categories were presented with trophies and assorted gifts including a meal voucher and a trip to Mombasa.
