A standard five school girl Tuesday died on the spot after a truck hit her at Makutano Township within West Pokot County.
The incident happened around 5pm just 100 metres from Makutano Primary school when the school children were going back home from school.
The lorry driver had to escape the wrath of a mob that blamed him for reckless driving leading to the incident.
Mnagei ward Member of County Assembly Benjamin Araule who was among the mourners urged the residents to be calm as the authorities sought justice.
“It is very sad that such occurrences still take place in our region and little is done to curb. We are asking the police to do their work failure to which we will take action on our hands.” Said Araule.
Police officers at the scene were forced to throw tear gas and shoot in the air to disperse the angry residents who wanted to torch down the lorry.
The body was taken to Kapenguria Referral hospital mortuary while the truck was taken to police custody at Kapenguria Police station.
