Nuhu Abdul Omollo, who was recently awarded a Head of State Commendation (HSC), has intensified his campaign to plant more trees in Homa Bay County.
Omollo, the patron of the ‘Plant Trees for a Better Environment’ community-based organisation (CBO), urged the residents of Homa Bay County to plant more trees to restore the ecosystem to mitigate adverse effects of climate change.
“If we continue to embrace tree planting, we shall have enough rain, we shall have a good harvest of food crops from our farms, and enough vegetables and fruits to fight hunger,” he said, and reiterated the President’s call to plant 15 billion trees in the next decade.
Mr. Omollo, also the Supkem secretary in Homabay County, was speaking at Ng’oche Jamia Mosque Grounds after evening Muslim prayers.
He helped plant 200 trees in the mosque compound in what he said was giving thanks to the Muslim community, County Commissioner Moses Lilan, and the President for the Head of State Commendation (HSC) award he was bestowed during the 61st Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The award, Mr. Omollo said, came as a result of his efforts in environmental conservation and as a peace crusader in Homabay County.
Omollo said he chose to celebrate this award at Ng’oche Mosque, saying he owes the mosque a lot of thanks because this is where he started his leadership journey.
He was accompanied by some family members during the occasion: Juma Masoud, his uncle, and Musa Abdul, his brother.
Head of Ng’oche Jamia Mosque, Omari Issa Maloba, thanked the President for his call to citizens to plant more trees to restore water towers and control the impact of climate change.
