The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given political parties that have not complied with the two-thirds gender rule for the nomination of candidates for National Assembly and Senate to submit revised lists before the 9th May deadline at 11.59 pm.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati warned that non-compliant political parties will not participate in the forthcoming general elections for the said elective positions.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, Chebukati announced that the Commission received lists of nominated candidates for the positions of Members of the National Assembly and Senate from 81 parties on 28th April this year.
“Upon review of the lists, the Commission observed that 48 political parties who had submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of Senate and 38 political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of National Assembly were compliant and met the two-third principle,” said Chebukati.
The Court Order was issued in Constitutional Petition No.19 of 2017 in Katiba Institute Vs Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
He at the same time reminded members of the public that the verification of register of voters’ exercise which commenced on 4th May will be carried out for a period of 30 days.
“Kenyans should use this opportunity to confirm their details via SMS by sending their ID/Passport number of 70000 or visit the commission on website portal https://verify.iebc.or.ke” urged the Chairman.
He said people whose details are incorrectly captured should visit their registration center for rectification.
