Police Monday recovered an AK47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition and arrested two men in connection with the firearm in Mwaluphamba area, Matuga Sub-county, Kwale County.
Police identified the two suspects who are in custody as Hamisi Kassim Ndaro, 19, and Mohammed Nyundo Tundo, 28.
However, a key suspect, Abdallah Omar Masoud, managed to escape but a police manhunt is underway to arrest him, according to the local police boss, Mr. Ludwin Sasati.
Mr. Sasati said the operation involved multi-agency team led by officers from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) from Nairobi.
He added that the team trailed the arrested suspects who were riding on motorcycle, all the way from Mombasa to Kwale following a tip off.
“The recovery was made at Msaviani village where the firearm was found hidden in the key suspect’s house at around 1am, today,” he said adding that the two suspects are helping police with investigations.
He said on realising they were being trailed, the two at some point abandoned the bike but police cornered them after which they took them to the key suspect’s house where the gun was recovered wrapped in a pair of trouser secured in a mosquito net bag.
The county has of late been rocked by rising cases of insecurity, characterised by violent crimes some of which are linked to Al Shabaab returnees from Somalia.
