Police in Busia have impounded a lorry ferrying assorted uncustomed goods suspected to have originated from Uganda.
Speaking to the press in his office on Monday, the Busia County Police Commander (CPC), John Nyoike said the vehicle was impounded at Matayos along Busia-Kisumu Road at 11.00 pm Sunday night.
“Our officers on patrol spotted the vehicle at Matayos and the driver of the vehicle is currently in police custody to assist with investigations,” he said.
Nyoike cited the porous border as a major security challenge, adding that his security team is trying to place security officers to man the gazetted and non gazetted points to ensure that all illegal goods are intercepted.
Some of the assorted goods impounded include, body perfumes, shoes, plastic bottles, plastic cups, belts, toys, cosmetics among others.
By the time of going to the press, police and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers were still offloading the goods for further inspection and find out how much revenue the government could have lost due to such illegal trade.
