Police in Narok town are holding five people who confessed to have stolen Sh. 500,000 from a prominent businessman in town yesterday.
Narok North Sub County Police Commander Frederick Siundu said the suspects are four men and one woman who had pretended to be Equity bank clients, where they identified a man who had withdrawn bulk money from the bank.
The man not knowing that he was being followed proceeded to his car where he left the money before going to do some shopping.
Siundu who spoke to the press today in his office said upon return, the man discovered that his car had been broken into and the money stolen.
However, the police boss declined to mention the names of the five suspects as they are carrying out more investigation before they arraign them in court on Monday.
“He started screaming, alerting a mob among them the boda boda riders who confessed to have seen strange people around the car,” said Siundu.
The victim reported the theft to the police station who alerted their colleagues and in turn put road blocks along the Narok- Bomet and Narok –Maai Mahiu highway.
This led to the seizing of the five people at Suswa roadblock when they were traveling to Nairobi.
“We alert the traffic police manning the highway who netted the group while on their way to Nairobi,” he explained saying the five arrested are expected to help police in carrying out further investigations.
Siundu lauded the Boda boda operators who helped in giving direction that led to the arrest of the five.
“We thank the public and especially the boda boda riders who cooperated with the police to ensure the culprits were nabbed and money recovered,” said Siundu.
He called any person with intent to withdraw bulk cash to ask for assistance from the police to avoid incurring such huge losses.
