Persons with disabilities to get training from youth Polytechnic

Kamiigua Youth Polytechnic in Kirinyaga County has modified its physical structures to accommodate persons living with various disabilities.
The institution will thus offer vocational training tailor-made to particular clusters of those having similar disabilities.
According to the Kabare Ward MCA Chomba Nyaga where the facility established in the 70’s is located, the Assembly Gender Committee has already given a nod to the changes.
He said once the first intake of this category of students is admitted early 2020, the artworks they produce will be sold at local and National outlets.
“Since am a member of the Assembly Committee on Gender and the polytechnic is situated right in my Ward, I will strive to ensure the students efforts to manufacture high quality furniture, garments or any other, products do not go down the drain,”Nyaga said.
Nyaga was speaking at Kutus town during a tour of the institution to access the progress of the modernization programme.
He said the era of persons with disabilities basking in the sun is long gone and therefore the need to make sure they are empowered alongside the abled people.
“The kind of training they will get from here will enable them to work and earn a living as they are gifted individuals,’’ he said
The leader also assured persons living with disabilities that the County Assembly whose other role is to oversight the County Government will work towards ensuring that they also benefit from the 30 per cent tenders rule from the county government.
He said concerns have been raised in the past over the inability of the persons with disability in accessing the tenders from the county government.
This is why we want to make sure they are assisted and benefit from the government tenders just like anybody else, Nyaga said
“When we come back here again, let’s see the training having transformed your lives for better, he told the beneficiaries of the program.
The County has Seven Youth Polytechnics scattered in all the Four Sub-Counties.
It is the first time one such facility has been converted for exclusive use by persons living with various disabilities.
