Education Cabinet Secretary (CS), Julius Ogamba, has encouraged parents to enrol their children in the already-established Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for skills development.
Speaking in the Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, CS Ogamba said the government aims at equipping the young people with the relevant skills to enable them to tackle unemployment among the youth.
“Currently, we have about 3.8 million youth between the ages of 15-35 years, who are not in school and lack jobs. As a result, we are working towards ensuring that these young people are enrolled in TVETs so that they can acquire the relevant skills to help them fend for themselves,” he noted.
The Cabinet Secretary decried the low student enrolment at the neighbouring TVET in Kilgoris Constituency, saying that only 250 students were currently admitted at the institution.
Ogamba added that Bomachoge Borabu is among the 36 constituencies that will establish a TVET institution once the 2025/2026 Financial Budget is approved.
The CS was attending an inter-border meeting which had been organised following the inter-community clashes witnessed one week ago, at the border of Kisii and Narok counties.
He called for unity and cooperation between the two communities, noting that women and school-going children are usually the most affected populations during clashes.
“It is our responsibility as citizens and leaders to maintain peace within our communities because when a problem like this happens, the people who suffer the most are our mothers and children,” noted Ogamba.
Further, the Cabinet Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to using the whole-of-government approach and machinery to ensure effective and efficient public service delivery in order to improve the economy.
