The Kericho Paralympians squad has departed for the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships taking place in Paris, France from 8th to 17th July.
The special talents team comprising ten participants who are visually and physically challenged will participate in a variety of disciplines in the Paralympic track and field which was organized by the World Para Athletics subcommittee of the International Paralympic Committee.
Speaking at the Kericho County government headquarters while flagging off the team, Sports County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Daniel Rop who was flanked by his Chief Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Bett, assured the athletes of the government’s commitment to support them to fly the Kenyan flag high in the global athletics arena.
The CECM expressed his confidence in the team having trained rigorously for the 10th edition of the tournament to be held at the Charlety Stadium in Paris.
“We are proud that our team will represent the County on the world stage and we hope they will emerge victorious in various disciplines we wish them the very best of luck,” added Hon. Rop.
Other guests who graced the colorful ceremony were the Chief Officer in the Executive Office of the Governor, Mr. Alphonce Rotich, Chief of Staff, Edgar Towett, and Director for Sports, Mr. Charles Ngerechi among other government officials.
The World Athletics Championships are the second most important sporting event in the disabled sports calendar after the Paralympic Games and are held every two years with this year’s tournament expected to bring together more than 1,800 athletes from 120 countries, competing in 171 events.
