PAK Club successfully constructs a toilet for Kaptere Primary School

Students from the (PAK) global club at the University of Eldoret are working to address a significant sanitation issue at Kaptere Primary School in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The PAK club, led by Marvine Sikolia Okechi, aims to promote skills and big-picture thinking among students at Kaptere Primary School, addressing a shared wooden toilet. During their Adventure Journey, Okechi realized the dire situation at Kaptere Primary School, as they visited several schools and observed the need for urgent action.

Driven by a sense of empathy and a commitment to sustainable change, the PAK participants devised a solution: constructing a new toilet facility for the school. With meticulous planning and the expertise of Victor Oluoch, an engineering student and PAK member, a design for a four-door toilet was crafted.

Oluoch stated that they aimed to tackle the issue at its core and provide a long-lasting resolution. He added that the support and encouragement from their mentor, Dr. Emily Chemoiwa, and the university administration were instrumental in turning our vision into reality.

From March 16th to March 4th, 2024, the students, fully sponsored by the University of Eldoret, embarked on the construction project. Additionally, they took the opportunity to engage in a mentorship program at Changach Barach Secondary School, underscoring their commitment to holistic education and community development.

The culmination of their efforts was marked by the official opening of the four-door toilet facility by Dr. Lelei Kiboiy, the Dean of Students at the University of Eldoret. The event, attended by PAK participants, Kaptere Primary School Board of Management, teachers, and students, emphasized the significance of collaboration and compassion.

Dr. Kiboiy praised the University of Eldoret’s commitment to academic excellence and community well-being, highlighting the PAK – UoE chapter’s initiative as an example of service and leadership.

The Kaptere community expressed profound gratitude for the transformative intervention, pledging to continue advocating for students to pursue higher education at the University of Eldoret. They recognized the university as a beacon of hope, nurturing academic prowess and holistic development.
