Over 100,000 households across Kajiado County are in dire need of relief food support, the Kajiado county joint drought risk coordination committee co-chaired by the County Commissioner and the Governor has indicated.
The committee equally determined 400,000 livestock are in dire need of feed support and called for a unanimous response to the rescue of the people and animals regardless of political affiliations, religious creed or ethnic origin.
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku shared the statistics in his speech during the commemoration of the 59th anniversary of Mashujaa Day in Kajiado Thursday where he appealed for concerted efforts in addressing the prevailing drought.
“My government has set aside Sh130 Million in its emergency fund to help mitigate the drought crisis. We are soon going to seek the county assembly’s approval for more resources to mitigate the drought situation as agreed between the county and national governments,” said Lenku.
He said two weeks ago, his government distributed relief food to 20,000 households however adding the number of those in need of urgent food assistance was rising by the day.
He appreciated the efforts by international partners like FAO among others who deliberated on possible interventions during the world food day celebrations recently.
Lenku noted the joint efforts towards addressing the drought menace saying the initiative has demonstrated the importance of synergy between the national and county governments.
