One Person Dies as Building Crumbles

Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is going to constitute a committee to conduct an audit of all commercial buildings to ascertain their safety standards.

Oparanya said this on Thursday at Butali market in Malava after a two-storey building under construction collapsed killing one person while 10 others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Malava level four hospital.

He said the private developer, who fled after the incident, would be sought and arraigned in court for undertaking construction without adherence to structural standards.

The County Chief asserted that the audit would be done on completed and upcoming buildings and those found sub-standard would be pulled down at the owner’s expense.

The incidents where structures under construction collapse due to poor workmanship have become commonplace in urban areas across the country.
