One person died on the spot and another sustained bruises when two Lorries collided head on along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makindu Sub-county on Sunday night.
The 11.50 pm accident occurred at Kibarani area, when the driver of motor vehicle registration No. KCP 432P/ZD 94 Mercedes Actors was overtaking another vehicle and collided head on with a Mitsubishi FH Lorry reg. No. KBU 740N heading to Nairobi from Mombasa.
The deceased who was identified as Simeon Mbira Mwangi (49) driver of the Mercedes vehicle died on the spot while the other driver Johnson Njoroge Njunge (36) suffered bruises on the right hand whereas his turnboy Kennedy Wahiga (35) escaped unhurt.
“The accident occurred when the driver of the Mercedes Actors decided to overtake without checking the proximity of the oncoming traffic from the opposite direction,” said Makueni County Police Commander Mr. Joseph Ole Naipeyan while speaking to KNA on the Telephone on Monday morning.
While appealing to motorists to observe traffic rules, the county police boss said that the vehicles have been towed to the Makindu Police Station yard where they will be inspected accordingly.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Makindu Level 4 Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting autopsy.
