Most parts of Makueni suffered massive crop failure in the October – December short rains seasons, according to a report released by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA).
The crop failure was occasioned by false onset and early cessation of the short rains.
“The rains were timely but poorly distributed, especially in the first two weeks, causing people to replant. They also ended in the second week and not third week of December,” said the report released Friday during the County Steering Group meeting.
Some of the worst hit areas were Kikumbulyu North and South, Makindu, Nguumo, Mtito Andei, Masongaleni and Thange which recorded a crop failure of 80 percent.
Others were Kitise, Mavindini, Kwa Kavisi,Kalawa, Kyuasini and Kiimakiu.
The report however states that proper intervention measures have been put in place to cushion residents from drought.
