Nyeri County Government staff have held their annual Sports Day forum ahead of the Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) games, slated for Meru County between the 20th to 26th of August.
The event started with a procession flagged off by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Nyeri Deputy Governor David Kinaniri at County Headquarters before walking to Ruring’u Stadium.
The Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services hosted the teams during the County Staff Sports Day/Wellness Day held at Ruring’u Stadium, Nyeri town.
The day is aimed at selecting the best teams, which will subsequently travel to Meru County next month.
This year’s county theme is Sporting for Health and Fitness.
A total of 14 disciplines have been outlined for participation this year.
Speaking after participating in the sports day, Kahiga said for the first time in history, the county will participate in Golf and soccer games. Other regular games are volleyball, netball, tug of war, handball, darts, pool, chess, choir, scrabble, quash, chess, and athletics, among others.
Kahiga encouraged the participants to practise daily for the next month so that they excel next month.
Sports CEC Esther Ndungu, who was also present, said that the day was meant to select the team to represent Nyeri at KICOSCA and also to encourage staff to participate in physical activities for fitness and well-being, hence the health walk.
The national theme for KICOSCA is ‘Celebrating Nationalism Through Sports and Culture’.
The Department of Health carried out various health checks on non-communicable diseases during the event.
