Nyanza special needs games kick off in Migori

The Nyanza Regional Primary Special Sports that bring together pupils with special needs has kicked off in Migori County.

The special needs games will see all six counties of Nyanza including Migori, Homa bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii and Nyamira participate in the two day events.

The Regional Secretary for the special sports primary section George Oduka said that the sporting activities will focus on 4 major areas namely, the activities for the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, the physically impaired and activities for the intellectually challenged.

However, Oduka disclosed that for special needs sporting events the learners do not compete to overdo each other, but rather participate to enhance social interaction and enjoyment.

Migori County Governor’s spouse Agnes Ochillo who graced the occasion said that disabled children have a right to education as well as participate in games to boost their social interaction, physical fitness and exposure.

Agnes encouraged parents who have children with special needs to stop secluding the youngsters, but rather empower them to be dependable citizens in the future.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Gender, Youths, Sports, Culture and Social Services Beatrice Samburu encouraged the area residents to come out in large numbers to support and encourage the children.

In addition, Migori County KNUT branch Executive Secretary Roselyn Achieng acknowledged that the special needs sports for disabled children were a stepping stone for their social interaction with the rest of the public.

Achieng also urged the Migori residents to flock to the hosting venues to help boost the morale of the children as well as improve their self-esteem.

The special needs sporting activities will be hosted at Migori Teachers Training College, Migori Stadium and Migori primary school.

The selected students will then represent the region in the nationals slated for Embu County on August 8, 2023.
